In selecting the name for our Ulakaia Center, we recognized an important distinction between the local place-name and the traditional Unangam Tunuu name for this location. While the Unangam Tunuu name carries an important cultural and linguistic significance, the place-name “Ulakaia” reflects the spelling most commonly used and recognized within our community and by project contributors. We encountered several spelling variations—including Ulaqaya, Ulakaya, Ulakaia, and Ula(m) qayaa—each with its own history and meaning. With careful consideration and input from local families, we chose the place-name spelling “Ulakaia” for our Center to ensure clarity, accessibility, and recognition, while honoring the community’s connection to this location. This approach allows us to balance our commitment to cultural respect and place-based identity, acknowledging that the place-name and the traditional Unangam Tunuu name are distinct yet both meaningful to our work.
